our approach

Drawing inspiration from the Finnish system, Reggio Emilia and the British Early Years Foundation Stages curriculum, our eclectic approach combines global best practices to create an enriching learning experience for our students. VLC maintains an individualized, child-led, experiential, multi-sensory approach to learning, enabling students to absorb and practically apply what they are taught.

We Teach EQ

The early years are critical for the development of healthy emotional and social skills. Real-life skills help children understand themselves better. Setting and cleaning up toys, helping prepare for community snack time, caring for art materials and similar everyday tasks help children feel a sense of ownership of their school, their community, their world and their life.

Everyday Outside

We believe time spent outside is time well spent. We know that it sharpens kids intellectually, emotionally and physically and reduces anxiety and stress. Exposure to nature is an important feature of life at VLC. Our nature immersion program encourages nature exploration throughout the year and every morning starts with learning through play.

Experiential Learning

True experiential learning is not just hands on, but is also reflective and learner-centric. VLC students are encouraged to engage with the interdisciplinary curriculum through projects based around art, music, cooking, technology, mechanics, carpentry, and gardening. They then reflect on their findings in group discussions, peer presentations and learning journals. This immersive approach facilitates the development of new perspectives and higher order thinking.

Multiple Intelligences

We believe in treating children as the unique individuals they are and allowing learning, growth and discovery to happen at a natural, personalised pace. Our approach allows each child to explore his or her personal talents and interests in a supportive environment which recognises many different ways to learn. We provide children with strong creative and problem-solving foundations that will help them to thrive and equip them with multiple ways to approach a single task.

Personal Goals

Despite our challenging and rigorous curriculum at VLC, our perspective on achievement is quite encompassing: We believe in personal goals and competition only with oneself. The term report cards are structured as indications of a learning journey rather than formal grades. We teach our students that we hold them in high esteem and that positive self-belief, coupled with our intellectually enriching curriculum, creates an exciting atmosphere of learning as a driven community.

spaces and places

Our spaces are child-led learning spaces that are inspired by the Reggio Emilia and Waldorf philosophy. What does that mean? It means that the classroom is considered the “third teacher”. The use of natural materials, lots of sunlight, big windows promote creative, open-ended play and support sensory development.

Our Gardens

Our Gardens

Our gardens are filled with children cooking in mud kitchens, interacting with our school pets, playing on the jungle gym, jumping on the trampoline, and making discoveries along the way. By exploring, observing nature and charting data we integrating learning outdoors as an extension of our classroom lessons.

VLC Libraries

VLC Libraries

A literacy rich environment is an integral part of VLC. Our libraries are not only home to thousands of books from a wide range of genres ranging from classics to modern pieces; but are also a space with special learning resources for teachers to enhance classroom lessons or for children to navigate interests and learn new subjects. Our vision is to ignite a love for reading and learning in our students.

VLC Kitchens

VLC Kitchens

VLC kitchens are home to our cooking and nutrition modules. With a co-curricular approach to learning, cooking and nutrition links language development, mathematics, science, social studies, arts, and literacy together, to create a out-of-classroom skill building experience for our children.

Fika Rooms

Fika Rooms

Fika is about genuinely slowing down, getting back in touch with your body and the people around you, and recharging on a deeper level. Our Fika rooms are open spaces for our parents. They are also home to Morning Fika sessions as part of our Family Enrichment Program.

Pretend Play Areas

Pretend Play Areas

Our pretend play spaces allow children to take on roles, assign meaning to objects, and transform their reality into a world of its own. Through pretend play, children learn about themselves and the world while experimenting with the social and emotional roles of life.

M Studio

M Studio

The ‘M’ in M-Studio stands for music, movement, mindfulness and meditation. In our M-Studio modules our children cultivate stillness through brief meditations, cultivate heart states that facilitate quietness of Mind, express ourselves through music and bring life and joy to our days with movement. Love, Compassion, Gratitude, Joy and Courage are an integral part of our program at VLC!

ICT Lab

ICT Lab

In an age where digital literacy and the use of technology is an inextricable part of daily life, it is not possible to ignore the use of technology and media in the classroom. When used to enable the learning process, technology provides a wide array of varied and complementary learning possibilities.

Free Play Areas

Free Play Areas

Free play in particular is a type of play that is unstructured, voluntary, and child-initiated and allows children to develop their imaginations while exploring and experiencing the world around them. Our free play areas on each campus give our hummingbirds the space for spontaneous play that comes naturally from children’s inborn curiosity, love of discovery, and enthusiasm.

Art Labs

Art Lab

Art is used as a tool for channeling creativity, telling stories and self-expression. At VLC our curriculum centers around process art where the value is in the experience of creating the artwork and exploring materials and techniques. Our Art Labs seek to create a stimulating environment that can support and nurture this imaginative process.
